Pretty ladies have always been part of just about every event in the moto industry whether it be Sturgis, SEMA, MotoGP, or even car shows. There are bikini contests, Miss Whatever contests and yes, the wet T-shirt contest. Is this politically correct? I don’t know what is politically correct anymore in this country; I just know everyone seems to enjoy this men and women alike.

With all the billion-dollar baggers dominating the custom scene at the moment (and probably for quite a while to come), it’s so motorcycle-refreshing when Barnett’s Magazine Online’s photo lad, Jack Cofano, starts loading up pics from the most recent The Horse Backstreet Choppers Smoke Out. We love Smoke Out bikes as somehow the whole is worth way more than the sum of its parts and the only way to achieve that is through imagination, skill, and hard work. Each and every bike is its own machine and none would ever get lost in a crowd. They’re shop-built, home-built, garage built, friend(s)-built bikes built by a group of lone wolves who wouldn’t have it any other way. They’ve got soul along with a big serving of fun.

The first person I run into at Arizona’s Cave Creek Rally was Jay Allen, former owner of the chain of Broken Spoke Saloons, who was emceeing at the Cave Creek Tap Haus. Cave Creek was jamming with vendors stretching for almost a mile on both sides of Cave Creek Road. The legendary or infamous (depending on your point of view) Sheriff Joe Arpaio had his deputies taking care of crowd control and street crossings with a smile. Yes smiling. It's either they enjoy the action, scantily clad women, fancy motorcycles or it could be the money they make out under the baking sun all day or all of the above that brings the smiles to their faces.

I must be a glutton for punishment returning to Lost Wages again, but the E.J. Cole historic motorcycle collection was going under the hammer at Mecum’s auction at the South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa. The redeeming fact is that it’s located at the very southern end of Las Vegas Blvd. so I didn't have to suffer the Strip experience. The South Point is a major venue with restaurants, movie theaters, convention facilities plus what the other Las Vegas mega hotels don't have ─ an arena that can be used for everything from motocross to rodeos and whatever else you have that needs a lot of space. As a matter of fact, a massive Quarter Horse deal was happening during the motorcycle auction in the three adjacent arenas.

At the far south end of Las Vegas Blvd, almost out of town, is the South Point Hotel-Casino. The South Point hotel, casino, and rodeo arena is a huge venue. Mecum Auctions bought out Mid America Auctions last year and has continued Mid America’s tradition to make South Point the Mecum headquarters for their motorcycle auction.

European Bike Week 2014 may be long gone even if the year isn’t, but that doesn’t mean the memories are. For the over 90,000 motorcyclists who attended the event this past September, it was fun, fun, fun as usual with a smattering of lovely rides in the Faaker See area of southeastern Austria. Known for its clear turquoise water, Faaker See is a popular vacation spot and a perfect location for a motorcycle event. The 17th annual European Bike Week was a blast on two wheels or off for six straight days with guided rides, concerts, parties, stunt shows, poker run, vendor action, Harley-Davidson test rides and a whole lot more.

Every year I never hear the end of it from Barnett’s Magazine Online’s longtime photographer, the always lovely and ever smiling Sedrick “Mitch” Mitchell from way, way upstate New York. “Man, you gotta go to the Thousand Islands River Run this year. You gotta go. I promise you you’ll have a great time.” And so it goes, year after year, more pleading from Mitch and even more excuses from me. Sturgis and Daytona are fun and all that, but local rallies have a bit more of a personal touch and flavor to them that’s missing from a gathering of hundreds of thousands of your closest friends.  Sooner or later I’ve got to take up Mitch on his promise, but as usual I’ve failed.

You meet some amazing people in the motorcycle world and then you meet Juli Moody and all bets are off. Ms. Moody is a rare combination of sheer physical force and unabashed sweetness all wrapped up in one package that you just have to love and respect after seeing her perform or talking with her. Her dedication and discipline to meeting her self-inspired goals of making world records where none have gone before is inspiring. Yet she’s quietly humble and far from over the top even though what she’s accomplished establishing world records for stunts only a handful of men or women might dare think about.

Every time I get a new (at least to me) bike, I always wonder if this one will be the forever bike I’ve dreamed of keeping or is it just another pleasant step along the way. Although I’ve dearly loved just about every bike I’ve owned, it unfortunately became time for some of them to hit the road for practical and/or new bike lust reasons. Just like most of you, I can be tempted with a different (and not necessarily new) model, color, use, whatever excuse I need at the time.
