Looking through the bikes old squinty-eye Jack Cofano has loaded up into our editorial galleries for future stories, there seems to be a lot of Old School/’70s-style/retro/or whatever-you want-to-call-them choppers. I just think of them as choppers as choppers are their own special entity and the longbike Panhead chopper built by Christopher Phillips of Doomtown Choppers, could be the perfect template of what a vintage-influenced chopper style can and should be.

Smoke Out 17 took place at the Rockingham Dragway outside Rockingham, North Carolina,  on June 17th and 18th  in sunny North Carolina. I stress “sunny” because I have covered this event for over ten years, all the way back to when it was held in Salisbury, North Carolina. This is the first year that I can remember that there wasn’t a frog-chocking thunder storm at least once during the weekend. The weather was absolutely perfect for a camping weekend.

Well there it is, the cat’s out of the bag if you didn’t already know that one of Barnett Magazine Online’s favorite builders, Tim Bradham of TBC Handcrafted Motorcycles in Fayetteville, North Carolina, won the invitational Pro Builder Chop Off at The Horse Backstreet Choppers’ Smoke Out 16. I don’t know who the judges were, but that had to be one tough competition as all the bikes were killers. Apparently Tim’s just had a tiny bit more and I’ve got a feeling the “handcrafted” part of the shop’s name had a little something to do with it.

With all the billion-dollar baggers dominating the custom scene at the moment (and probably for quite a while to come), it’s so motorcycle-refreshing when Barnett’s Magazine Online’s photo lad, Jack Cofano, starts loading up pics from the most recent The Horse Backstreet Choppers Smoke Out. We love Smoke Out bikes as somehow the whole is worth way more than the sum of its parts and the only way to achieve that is through imagination, skill, and hard work. Each and every bike is its own machine and none would ever get lost in a crowd. They’re shop-built, home-built, garage built, friend(s)-built bikes built by a group of lone wolves who wouldn’t have it any other way. They’ve got soul along with a big serving of fun.

Every year at The Horse Backstreet Choppers’ Smoke Out I have the best time photographing all the great bikes not only built by the pros, but also the great garage builds and this year was no exception.

I always reserve a day worth of photos showcasing the ladies at the events I cover, as it seems to be popular with both genders. Usually I end up taking photos mainly of the lovely ladies that serve us our favorite tasty beverage but at The Horse Backstreet Choppers-sponsored Smoke Out, it’s Old School and the ladies are getting their badass biker on.
